Action Alert for Redistricting Campaign

ACTION ALERT from Phil Goodchild

As promised, here’s the sign-up link for the phone banking on redistricting Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fair Districts NOW – Indiana Phonebank · Common Cause (mobilize.us)

When you sign up, it says there’s a short training before you start. I have never done this myself so can’t speak about it from experience, but I understand it’s straightforward and somewhat guided. The main thing is, it’s another opportunity to let our elected representatives at the Statehouse know we expect fairness from them in their discharge of their constitutional duty of redistricting, and we demand fair maps.

The other update of note relates to the timeline of events this Thursday, Sept. 16. That’s the date of the primary House elections committee hearing on redistricting. The hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. in the House Chamber in the State Capitol. Arrive early if you want to testify, but you don’t need to testify to have an impact. Just showing up, being present, and being seen will send a message to legislators. Importantly, the ICRC will be presenting the winners of its public mapping competition at the hearing, so it will be exciting to witness that–what maps drawn by the people, for the people should look like. Then after the 10:00 a.m. hearing is over, about 1:00 p.m., the coalition will be holding its big rally on the Washington Street steps of the Statehouse. Some powerful speakers will be there (plus Carrie Newcomer). Your presence there will re-enforce our message: transparency, accountability, and fairness. Thanks for your continued interest in this crucial process for our democracy.
